Clear cutting for wood pellets.
Wow, this is a pretty alarming article from the Rachel Carson Council. Is this really happening, and why would industry clear-cut for this purpose? Traditionally, forests in the Southeast have been very well managed and replanted to keep the lumber industry sustainable. Why not continue that practice? One does wonder how sensible it is to harvest wood in the U.S. and then ship it all the way to Europe merely for heating - even with replanting. There are much higher value-added opportunities for woody biomass than heating.
