Other than having signs and advertisements in German, the airport looked like any other. Casey, Dr. Arduengo and I met with one of the students in the Opatz group, Mattias. After figuring out car situations, Mattias drove Casey and I to our new home in a town outside of Mainz called Nieder-Olm. The first few weeks flew by as I got myself registered with JGU, met the Opatz group, learned which trains went where, and worked on the Basic Lab Pratikum.
Once I was comfortable with traveling around, I finally started to explore Mainz, which has some beautiful attractions like the Mainz-Dom. I had a lot of fun just walking around the city, seeing the different styles of buildings. I went through some neighborhoods and even a park with a mini-zoo filled with pink flamingos and goats.
