Soon after arriving, I met my landlady's grandson, Leo, who happened to be fluent in English and my age. I got to know him and his group of friends quite well. I feel like I was able to learn a lot more about Germany by hanging out with them. Eventually a holiday, a lot like Mardi Gras, took place during my stay called Fastnacht. For almost a week, people dress up in costumes, like animal onesies or soldier uniforms, and take part in many parades in and around Mainz. During the holiday, I went out every day with my new friends to a different nearby town to experience the parade and meet lots more people. It’s difficult to describe the amount of fun I had during Fastnacht and I think it was one of the bigger highlights during my stay. .
